Huffman Manufacturing / Huffy First to MARKET!

The Huffman Manufacturing Company began producing
bicycles in 1934 in Dayton, OH. In 1962, Peter Mole of
John T Bill & Co contacted Huffy Corporation about
making a new bicycle called the High Rise.

The bikes had a long seat called a banana seat, with
struts and taller handlebars. Huffy hesitated for several
months before agreeing to make the bike, with the stipulation
that if it was a flop, Peter Mole would buy all the left-over parts
and bikes. The new bike, called the Penguin, was sold in stores by
March of 1963 and was the first Banana Seat Bicycle to Market.

Throughout the 1960's and early 1970's, Huffman enjoyed
continued growth as the market for bicycles grew.
Until the end of the 1960's, nearly half of all bicycles
in the United States were sold through small independent
bike shops that offered personal customer service.
Huffy took a different approach and manufactured
bicycles for several department stores, including
Sears and Roebuck, J.C. Penney’s, Grants, Firestone,
Montgomery Wards and K-Mart, to name a few.

Each of these models carried the store name brand, but were clearly
a product of the Huffy Corporation.

1966 Firestone /  Huffy GTO Deluxe

This 1966 Firestone Labeled GTO was originally built as a Deluxe
Model. The Deluxe model gave you a 3 Spd. Click Grip Shifter
Bicycle with front and rear brakes.

During the build, I wanted to make a couple of upgrades. One of
them being the Tiger Hand Grips. So the Click Grip Shifter was
put aside for a Bendix 3 Spd. Stick Shift. The original Bendix
3 Spd. Hub was restored and put back in place.
An Original
1965 Pontiac GTO Dealer Promo Tiger Tail completed
the restoration.

Cat Eye rear stop light was added, The seat
was originally a Tiger patterned seat.

A Wacky Wheels Coyote Chasing the Road Runner front wheel
disc was added.

1978 Grants / Huffy Liberty Belle

This is my Wife's original Childhood Bicycle.

She remembers the day her parents bought it for her and
the many trips she took down the steep hill she lived on.

1974 HUFFY FURY Coaster

The Fury Used the Popular Huffy Twin Bar Frame and
Chain Guard. By 1974, the Chain Guard lost its Tail Pipe

The original Tires had Raised White Letters.

Upgraded to a Taller Sissy Bar, Correct Huffy Reflectors
on the Front and Rear wheels are used.

The Short frame made these bicycles great for wheelies.
HUFFY 1969 Gremlin Coaster

Love the Chain Guard with the Simulated Tail Pipe.

All Original down to the tires.

1971 SEARS HUFFY SCREAMER GREMLIN

One year only Bicycle made by Huffy for Sears Stores.

Sears "Screamer Gremlin" the single speed option of the
3 screamers offered in 71.

Huffy used Blueprints provided by Sears for this specific
frame design. This was the first time Huffy did not use a
frame they had designed.

Options include a Sears 5 ft Sissy Bar with Correct Gremlin Pad
and a Sears original Rear Stop Light.

This is what is left of the original front tire. Amazingly, it still holds air and will be used.

Restoration will be completed soon. Stay tuned
for pic's and details.
